Hibernation – beyond medical applications and space travel
Prof. dr. Rob Henning

Now that we in the Northern hemisphere have passed the summer solstice (the longest day) days will shorten again. Inevitably winter is coming, a season which many humans would like to skip. Hibernators are able to do so as they simply ‘sleep’ throughout the winter. They deploy extraordinary mechanisms to totally depress their metabolism, and to preclude damage to cells and organs. Rob Henning will introduce hibernation, and tickle the audience to think of opportunities to employ hibernation - beyond medical applications and space travel - should we be able to induce hibernation in humans (or other species).
