Dr Michael Wilkinson studied Astronomy at the Kapteyn Laboratory, University of Groningen. Dr Wilkinson’s works on the GRID (Groningen Reduction of Image Data) image processing system. His contributions include automated object recognition (segmentation), signal calibration, noise reduction and image data compression, which were the basis of his PhD thesis “Fluoro-Morphometry: adding fluorimetry to an image processing system for bacterial morphometry”. He received his PhD in Computing Science from the University of Groningen in February 1995. From 1999 he is an assistant professor at the Institute of Mathematics and Computing Science, still working on mathematical morphology and diatoms, but also again on modelling the intestinal ecosystem.
