Towards safe and productive human multitasking
Prof. dr. Niels Taatgen
One of the big challenges for science is to understand how the mind works. In order to make progress on this problem, we have to use all the tools, methods and machinery that the different disciplines have to offer. While biologists and neuroscientists study the physical substrate of the mind, psychologists and linguists try to infer theories on the basis of behaviour. Artificial Intelligence has an interesting position: on the one hand it shares psychologyâs interest in intelligent behaviour, but also wants to know precisely how that behaviour can be produced by a physical system. In my talk I will use the topic of multitasking as an example of how multiple approaches can work together, giving insights into multitasking that can be helpful and sometimes quite surprising.

History of Scent
Scent was a source of inspiration as well as a means of expression to visual artists at the fin de siècle. Especially during the interwar period Futurists, Dadaists and Surrealists organised scented poetry recitals, performances, and created aromatic toys, perfumed sculptures and odoriferous artist books. Unfortunately most of these events and objects are by now inodorate, lost, or never recorded. Therefore the (re)construction of these art historical scents, in collaboration with IFF (International Flavours & Fragrances) and several heritage institutions, such as the Rijksmuseum, will once again enable us to âget in touchâ with this volatile heritage. An Aroma-jockey will diffuse historical scents as an additional informative layer next to text and images.

The 2016 PhD Day focusses on career opportunities and personal/professional development for PhD candidates from the University of Groningen. Collaboration with the 2016 PhD Day will allow you to promote your company or institution and interact with all the PhD-candidates visiting the event. Last year, 400 participants from all faculties of the University of Groningen visited the PhD Day. Furthermore, we reach 1600 PhD-candidates through our emails. Sponsorship options include participation in the company fair (the place for PhDs to explore their future opportunities), hosting a company case workshop, interact with PhD candidates during speed dates and multiple advertising possibilities. What to know more? Send us an e-mail or follow us on social media to stay up to date.
